This just came from the Raven Soft forums. C.Bernstein has posted the next text to inform us all that they will be closing their boards.

Everyone. We regret to inform you that we will be shutting down the message boards. The message boards on the forums.ravensoft.com website will be down for an indefinite period of time.

By this, I think that RGN is in the urge of getting the website done and finished in order to welcome the guy's from over Raven Boards

Finally! We're up and running!

March 03, at 21:56
Hi everyone and welcome!
I am John the new owner of the Raven Community.
We took over a little while ago but after some problems with the content management system and then some more bugs and issues we finally have everything ironed out!

There is a ton of awesome information here and as a gaming freak I am excited to carry on the legacy of the previous owners and contributors.

Much will remain the same like informative information from Jorge and Col.J.P. and some things will change a little. A new CMS will be added in the relatively near future and the forum will change soon as well. Don't worry nothing will be lost. All of the content and posts will move as well.

Enjoy!

Kenn Hoekstra leaves Raven Software!

June 30, at 02:44

"I'm writing this open letter to announce my resignation from Raven Software effective Wednesday, June 30th and to let everyone know that this pending departure is both amicable and mutual. What can I say? It's been a hell of a ride.

In the past seven plus years I was fortunate enough to be able to contribute to twelve Raven Software titles alongside the most talented group of people I've ever had the good fortune to work with. I want to thank Raven for giving me the opportunity to start my career in game development and I send out my best wishes to everyone at Raven and Activision for their continued success. I know you'll all do well.

I'm sure the question many of you are asking is "why?" (Then again, maybe you aren't!) Put simply, I've reached a point in my life where it's time for me to move on to new challenges…to take some risks and make some time for a few things I've always wanted to do. I don't deal well with "what might have been" scenarios. That said, there are some shots I need to take and I believe now is the time for me to take them. The way I see it, if I don't do it now, I may never get the chance again."

More details can be found at Kenn's World.

Good luck Kenn!

Spot On: The game-resale crackdown

May 01, at 11:34
Some communities now require anyone selling used video games to give fingerprints for police records. The question is: why?

Some stores that buy used video games have begun taking their customers’ fingerprints and turning them over to police, but the stores say they’re just complying with local laws.

In addition to recording drivers license, telephone numbers, and addresses of customers who sell used games or consoles, some are routinely requiring a thumbprint. Retailers are collecting the information under a law intended to regulate pawn shops and make it easy for law enforcement officials to track down thieves who fence stolen goods. A number of states have such laws and Utah passed its own version just last month.

Brain Controlled Video Games Are Coming

April 19, at 13:46
A report from CBBC demonstrates the use of a video game controller used to manipulate the game world directly from the brain. In the game Mind Balance, a player dons a lightweight, wireless headset and helps the alien character Mawg walk a tight rope between sci-fi inspired buildings by focusing on left and right flashing boxes. If Mawg sways too much to the left, the player focuses more on the right box to counterbalance. Neither the game not controller are available for purchase, however, this first generation will enable researchers to create more sophisticated applications and devices for retail use.

Unofficial Patch for Hexen II v.1.14

April 19, at 13:45
This is an unofficial patch for Hexen II; it will update v1.11/1.13 retail game to version 1.14. It is based on the source code released by Raven Software and addresses a number of bugs in the final game.
For proper functionality, you have to have the v1.11 retail patch installed before installing this update.
OpenGL version has been largely reworked for better visual quality and more compatibility with different hardware.
If you have Portal of Praevus installed, download and install unofficial v1.14 Mission Pack patch instead.

To install, unpack this archive into your Hexen II folder. If you use a 3Dfx card, it is recommended that you download and install the latest MiniGL or WickedGL drivers for better image quality and performance of the OpenGL version!

Features:
* Fixed a nasty stack corruption problem that would result in a crash upon
loading progs (i.e. on map start) once in a while.
* Fixed demos freezing upon changing maps.
* (OpenGL) "fov" console variable now works in OpenGL mode.
* (OpenGL) Fixed the problem where the game would eventually crash with.
"mod_numknown == MAX_MOD_KNOWN" error in OpenGL mode after playing for a while.
* (OpenGL) Fixed Z-fighting on alias model shadows in OpenGL mode.
* Fixed artifact numbers not displaying properly in the status bar if over 9.
* (OpenGL) Aspect ratio is now correctly maintained in non-4/3 full screen video modes.
* (OpenGL) gl_texturemode command now affects all textures, including 2D overlays, lightmaps (upon map restart), models and sprites.

You can get it here, if you have Portal of Praevus installed, get this one instead.

This patch was developed by Pa3PyX and is not supported by Activision.
If you got a 3dfx videocard (specially a Voodoo 3) I strongly suggest you pay a visit to Pa3PyX´s Homepage where you can find lots of good advices, a good overclocking guide for the Voodoo 3 and an incredible set of custom drivers!

Project Peanut: A new Hexen II Mod

April 19, at 13:45
An incredible Hexen II mod is out there. Check this out:

Developed by Shanjaq, Project Peanut introduces RPG elements such as a massive array of spells ranging from general mischief to soul-rending Armageddon in a very interesting Total Convertion for Hexen II.
-Not only that, there is an Interdimensional Magic Shop that you can visit at any time, it sells items and magic for gold you have looted from sentient foes. It also includes gore enhancements so you can make a huge bloody mess on the battlegrounds.
-It is single player or multiplayer, which includes 2 new multiplayer gametypes: Survival(DM with all spells) and Heresy(Siege with 1 Mage defending the Tower of the Chaos Sphere against a group of regular Hexen II guys/gals, makes you feel like Eidolon himself!)
-The magic system behaves differently from single-player(or co-op) to any PVP gametype. in single-player(or co-op) you must earn the spells by looting your foes and purchasing your spells at the Interdimensional Magic Shop, assigning them to slots in your custom array of 10. in PVP(Survival and Heresy) the Mage(s) will have the Spell Ring Menu, which gives access to all the spells at once.
-The weapons are altered as well. Purifier is more spectacular in general. The Ice Mace is also more interesting: it shoots a little slower, but the ice projectiles do more damage and leave a nice glittering trail of frost. Tomed, it will cause a hail of sharp icicles. The Vorpal Sword's swipe model isn't so unrealistically huge, fits quite well now. The Raven Staff now does "fair" damage. The Crossbow now fires a single bolt in 3 modes:
1] regular arrow(medium power, uses arrow item)
2] mana bolt(low power, green mana arrow like archers, takes 3 mana)
3] mana charged arrow(high power, red arrow like archers, takes 2 mana and 1 arrow.
-It also adds 6 new monsters, the Mage Archers. Each one specializes in a particular shade of magic, depending on their surrounding environment. For example, you will most often find the Black/Necro Archers lurking in pits and hallways where their shadow magic is most insidious(watch your step, they can take on deadly shadow form!) Green/Wind Archers usually hang out near cliffs and in wide open spaces for their wind magic to be effective. You probably won't find Yellow/Earth Archers in a pit or narrow hallway, as this type of magic is suicidal in such surroundings. Also, if they were on a cliff, their magic would be totally useless because Yellow/Earth magic requires the combatants to be on the same landmass.

Take a look at Project Peanut here.

Apocalypse Bot Project for Hexen II updated

April 19, at 13:45
"The goal of this project is to produce a modification for Hexen II that allows users to include simulated players in their networked games. These artificially intelligent players try to behave like real players, performing tasks such as collecting and using items, exploring their environment, and flee from and pursue enemies(...)"

"The Apocalypse Bot for Hexen II is not created to perform beyond the normal, physical capabilities of the players, but to perform within it. The source of the challenge from the bots is intended to come from their use of artificial intelligence; this is their ability handle any situation they may encounter during a network game."

Take a look and download it here .
